8 Spectacular Bruny Island Walks

Bruny Island is renowned for its natural beauty and has some of the most stunning coastlines in Tasmania.  From enchanting rainforests to rugged bushland, and entrancing ancient rock formations, exploring the islands fantastic walking tracks is a must when visiting. Below is a curated collection of some of the very best Bruny Island walks.

Fluted Cape Walk

Distance: 6km

Time: 2-3h

The Fluted Cape track is one of the most popular Bruny Island walks, and it’s not hard to see why. The track offers spectacular views of the Tasman Peninsula cliff-lines and some fantastic wildlife spotting opportunities. There is also a dedicated car park conveniently located next to the Bruny Island Cruise terminal. The well-maintained loop track is easy to follow and visitors are advised to walk in a clockwise direction.

The track begins on the beach at Adventure Bay. For guests staying at The White House, this is just a short 10-minute drive.  Walk amongst a beautiful eucalypt forest until you reach Grass Point. From here, expect a gentle incline until you reach the Fluted Cape lookout point.

The track is considered to be of moderate difficulty and can be quite steep in sections so good walking shoes are a must. There are some fanatic spots to admire the view. Keep an eye out for the elusive white wallabies and if you’re extra lucky and happen to be visiting during migration season ( September to late October) you may even spot some whales!

Grass Point Walk

Distance: 4km

Time: 1.5 hours return

The Grass Point track is an easy walk for families and hikers of all skill levels. The well-defined walking track offers beautiful coastal views and is littered with remnants of the island’s whaling history. In the 1820s there were four whaling stations in Adventure Bay alone!

The walk begins at the beautiful Adventure Bay Beach and links up to the Fluted Cape Walk and is a fabulous alternative if you’re in the mood for something less strenuous. The Grass point track is best done in an anticlockwise direction.

Cape Bruny Lighthouse Walk

Distance: 1.6kilometres

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about lighthouses. They stand as poignant reminders of a bygone era. The historic Cape Bruny Lighthouse towers 114m above dramatic cliff tops and offers spectacular views of the South Bruny coastline.

Visitors arriving at Bruny Island Lighthouse car park can follow the short and steep 300 meter track to the base of the lighthouse. Another track from the car park leads down to the Lighthouse Bay Beach.

The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in Australia. In order to gain access to the stunning panoramic views from the top of the lighthouse, visitors will need to join one of the frequently run tours. These tours offer visitors the opportunity to retrace the island’s rich past. From shipwreck tragedies to the hardships endured by the early colonists, to the lives and duties of the light house keepers. Also worth a visit is the small Cape Bruny Lighthouse Museum, located by the car park.

East Cloudy Head Walk

Time 4 hours return

Distance: 12km return

This spectacular coastal walk lies within the South Bruny National Park and begins along the beach at Cloudy Bay. The track then follows a small creek inland before beginning an ascent towards the beautiful East Cloudy Head. The track offers expansive views across the gorgeous south coast of Bruny Island. This Bruny Island walk ends about 20 minutes past a trig station and can be overgrown at times so long shirts and sleeves are advisable.

Cape Queen Elizabeth Track

Time: 3 hrs

Distance: 12.6km

A quintessential Tasmanian walk combining both beach and bush, the breathtaking Cape Queen Elizabeth Track is one of the most popular walks on Bruny Island. Visitors arriving by Ferry will need to drive 20 minutes down Bruny Island main road to find the beginning of the trail which is located directly across from Bruny Island Honey.

The walk begins past the aptly named big lagoon, a few hundred meters more and a fork in the road offers a choice between beach or bluff. The beach is only accessible at low tide, so it’s best to time your visit carefully.  If you do happen to arrive at high tide the accent over Marks Bluff is not challenging and offers beautiful views of the coastline below. The track then opens up along Miles Beach where the famous arch is located. This spectacularly chiseled rock formation has been luring excited visitors to Bruny Island for some time.

Mavista Nature Walk

Time: 30-40 minutes return

Distance: 1.4km

The gentle 30-minute walk is easily accessible for the whole family and takes you along an enchanting wet forest. Follow along Waterfall Creek and marvel at the incredible stringybark, tree ferns, and blackwoods that live within the forest. Remember to be wary of leeches, particularly in the wet season. The trail begins and ends at Mavista Picnic Site which has toilets and plenty of parking making it a great choice for families.

The Neck Lookout

Time: 10 minutes

Distance: 0.3km

The Neck Lookout is one of the most popular attractions among visitors to Bruny Island.  

The short walk-up wooden stairs takes no time at all and provides a stunning 360-degree view of the narrow sliver of land that connects North and South Bruny known as “The Neck”

The nearby beach and observation platforms provide an enchanting view of fairy penguins returning home under the cover of darkness.

Luggaboine Circuit Walking Track

Time: 1.5hrs

Distance 5km

This Bruny island walk is a fabulous alternative for those that don’t have time for the full Labillardiere Peninsula circuit, which is an 18km trek around one of the more remote corners of Bruny Island.  

This short, gentle walk is perfect for hikers of all fitness levels. Stroll through dense eucalypt forest towards a beautiful, secluded beach. Pack a picnic or go swimming if you’re feeling brave and don’t mind a cold jolt to the system.
